Westbury-on-Severn RFC (28 v 3) Minchinhampton 2

One for the purists on our Sponsor's Day

On a damp and cold February afternoon, Westbury on Severn RFC took on Minchinhampton RFC. The start of the match saw Westbury kicking the start off immediately putting on pressure, with the pressure resulting in territory and an eventual try for Digger (Available for Sponsor). Minch fought back with some great carries from their pack, but the mighty Westbury repelling them repeatedly. This defensive pressure resulted in a try for Glyn Bailey (Available for Sponsor), after some astute kicking from Paul Reddan (Roberts Family). The tactical masterclass continued with numerous kicking duels won by Robbie Pritchard (Five Acres FastFit Tyres & Exhausts) and Jay Scott (Available for Sponsor). This kicking display allowed the larger forwards to punch holes in the Minch defence, resulting in a try for Rory Pritchard (Forge Motorsport). With Jay Scott (Available for Sponsor), slotting all his kicks, the halftime score was 21-0 to Westbury.

The second half saw Westbury fight the increased pressure and power from the Minch pack, allowing a successfully converted penalty kick from Minch to bring the scores 21-3 within the third quarter. Resulting to only play in the Minch half, the kicking, helmed by Robbie Pritchard (Five Acres FastFit Tyres & Exhausts) and Glyn Bailey (Available for Sponsor), notably chased by Andrew Cueto (Lime Masonry Ltd) among others, meant that Minch had to play from the back and punch through the strong and stable Westbury defence. And the defence was strong, with the boomfa shots coming in from Max Kaufmann (The Lyon Inn), Lee Prince (Westbury on Severn RFC), and Will Lord (MH Bricklaying), also notably debutant Kyle Richardson throwing his weight around repelling the pack. This defence pressure and game management meant that Westbury had a scrum five meters out from the Minch try line, and what is Max Kaufmann (The Lyon Inn) to do but pick and score. Backs against the wall, the boys from Westbury absorbed continually pressure and repeated punches from the Minch pack to finally bring the game to the close. A huge thanks and lots of respect goes to Minchinhampton RFC 2nd XV for rocking up and bringing an enjoyable game for all.
