Westbury-on-Severn RFC (17 v 31) Cheltenham Tigers II
On a perfect day for rugby WOSRFC entertained high flying Cheltenham Tigers at the Ken Boulton Memorial Stadium.
The first 15 minutes were evenly matched with no score from either side. The conditions did not support expansive rugby, but even so with Ben Stevens (sponsored by Matt Hart) at 9, Jay Scott (sponsored by Harry Phillips) at 10 orchestrating the backs as good as Andre Previn WOSRFC soon became dominant.
A line break by Max Skipsey (sponsored by Pete Wilson), tunnelling through Cheltenham backs who were hanging onto his coat tails, brought the home side within Cheltenham’s 22. WOSRFC pressed and within a short space of time found themselves two tries to the good through Andrew Cueto (sponsored by Lime Masonry) and Harry Phillips,
Both conversion were difficult but WOSRFC lead 10-0.
This galvanised Cheltenham and although only 10 minutes left in the half saw a very decisive and positive response through a converted try and penalty kick. Half time arrived, all square.
A passionate cry from Robbie (sponsored by FastFit Tyres) and Rory (sponsored by Forge Motorsport) at half time saw WOSRFC become dominant once again, but Cheltenham pressed and tactically kept the ball with their forwards.
Time after time Cheltenham were repelled by the ever green Lee Prince and Matt Hart (both available to sponsor) supported by the now bloodied Max Kaufmann (sponsored by the Lyon Inn). Indeed the whole pack, including Digger (sponsored by Pete Wilson), Will Lord (sponsored by MH Bricklaying), and Dylan Godwin (available to sponsor) were outstanding in their defence and commitment.
A war of attrition ensued, which although evenly matched and very much tit for tat, saw Cheltenham beginning to take their opportunities more than WOSRFC.
It did not help that Robbie Pritchard needed to leave the field early and despite valiant efforts by Paul Reddan (sponsored by the Roberts Family), who was the epitome of fair play, WOSRFC could not match the scoring of Cheltenham.
Further tries by Max Kaufmann, a second for Andrew Cueto and Glyn Bayley (available to sponsor) saw the final score 27 - 41.
This report would not be complete if it did not mention a superb solo try by Glyn who from the reverse kick off, deceived the whole of Cheltenham, dribbling the ball a la George Best like and beating the advancing backs, before touching the ball down. Remarkable.
